Building A Web-based Business: Advice From Someone Living Through It Right Now! Phone Options
Im building a business on a miniscule budget
Im building a business on a miniscule budget. Im learning and problem solving as I go along, floundering at times, but emerging somewhat wiser (almost) every day. In this blog, Id like to communicate some of the things Ive learned, to try to help others who are starting or thinking of starting their business. First piece of advice: If youre starting a coupon site, dont! There are easier ways to make money.
Part II. Phone Options
If you think that you need a phone right away, keep something in mind: Amazon.com didnt have a customer service phone number listed on their site until relatively quite recently. They went for years, highly successful years, without a listed phone number. No doubt, this annoyed some users, but they managed. As a start-up, you need to consider that phone callers can be Time Vampires, eating up your valuable time and the potential upside is generally one sole positive resolution. Once you develop some decent cash flow, reconsider this decision.
Until then, you need to devote all of your resources to breaking through to that critical first point, and a phone may not be the way to do it. (Obviously, Im not talking about your personal cell here.. Youre going to have to make outgoing calls from time-to-time. Im talking about leaving your phone number published and available to the world at-large.)
For the time being, Couponfield.com is going without a phone number. The potential cost is just too high, of handling not just legitimate phone calls from prospects but also fending off sales calls. Its not hard to imagine two or three or more hours of valuable time being wiped off the clock every day. When we do get a phone number, there are two options being considered:
1) We signed up for Google Phone, which is a beta product and is not available everywhere. Were signed up, havent heard from them yet, but at some point this may provide a completely free phone service.
2) I know people personally who have purchased MagicJack. I have talked to them on these phones. The calls have been great, Ive heard no complaints. Granted, the computer has to be on to make a call, and if its not, callers are directed to Voice Mail. But, if your computer isnt on, youre probably not overly available for work anyway. So, if the decision is made to get a phone number before Google Phone provides a free one, MagicJack seems to be the way to go.
