Hosting and Domain : If you don't already have hosting in place and a domain of your own for your new ecommerce store, register now for both. If your store is to be successful it will look far more professional on its own domain. Great places to buy domains are Godaddy and Namecheap while you can pick up some very cheap and reliable hosting plans at Hostgator.com.
Go to the site and download the latest secure version of the Prestashop ecommerce script. This is an open source free script that is perfect for any kind of ecommerce storefront, including those selling digitally downloadable products. It has options for color and size variation, coupon or discount codes and many other features that you as a seller may require.
To upload the script to your new server you will need an FTP program such as Filezilla. Filezilla is a free program that will allow you to transfer files from your own computer to your server. The ftp details you will need to enter in Filezilla will be sent to you in your account information email when you first sign up for your hosting.
Once you have connected to your server, upload all the files in the prestashop folder to your root directory. To access your root directory, you will usually click on public_html. When all the files are uploaded, go to your main domain name in your browser. You will then see an installation wizard that will step you through the setup process.
The first step you will need to go through, is changing the directory permissions on some of your folders. The installation wizard for prestashop will tell you which folders and files need to be changed. To change the permissions you will need to right click on the files on your server. These files are on the right hand side in Filezilla. When you right click you will see an "file permissions" option on the menu. Change the permissions to 777.
You now need a database for your ecommerce storefront. To set this up you need to visit your cpanel. The access details will be in the email you got when you signed up for your hosting. Navigate to the database wizard and use it to create a new database and user for your ecommerce store. These details will be entered into the Prestashop installation wizard in order to set up your ecommerce shopping cart.
Continue with the Prestashop installation instructions, including creating your admin email login and username for your new storefront. Once you have completed all these steps, your ecommerce storefront is almost created!
The final step involves visiting Filezilla and deleting the install folder for prestashop. You will also need to rename your admin folder by right clicking on the folder and choosing the rename option. You can then log into your backoffice and start to add products to your new store!
