There are a plethora of tourist attractions that encourage people from across the UK and other parts of the world to stay in hotels in London.

Museums, bars, restaurants, theatres and landmarks including the Houses of Parliament are just some of these.

Another draw for those in London hotels is Buckingham Palace.

The royal venue recorded a record breaking number of visitors during this year's summer opening.

According to official figures released by those running the establishment, 413,000 visitors passed through the doors of the iconic building during the summer months.

This was the highest number in 16 years and the second-highest since the venue opened for the first time to the public in 1993.

However, 1994 still tops the list, with 420,000 people heading to the palace that summer.

It is thought that many of those staying in London hotels who had already visited the tourist hotspot in previous years returned this summer to catch a glimpse of the special exhibition The Queen's Year, which charted the variety of the monarch's work.

Also, the new Garden Cafe was a hit with people and managed to serve a total of around 46,000 cups of tea.

Meanwhile, the profiteroles and vanilla mille feuille also proved popular.

Commenting on the success of the season, director of the Royal Collection Jonathan Marsden said: "We are delighted that the number of people choosing to visit Buckingham Palace has continued to grow year on year.

"Winning two major group travel industry awards is enormously encouraging and a recognition of our commitment to providing the best possible experience for our visitors."

Meanwhile, people staying in hotels in London may be pleased to note that owing to popular demand, the Victoria & Albert: Art & Love exhibition at The Queen's Gallery has been extended until December 5th.
