Anastrozole is a potent and selective non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor drug, used to treat breast cancer after surgery and for metastases in post-menopausal women. Aromatase inhibitor works by interrupting a critical step in the body's synthesis of estrogen. It hinders the enzyme aromatase which block the synthesis of estrogen. These estrogens help in stimulating and maintaining the growth of many cancers taking place in the breast. Thus hindering the growth of estrogen is essential to suppress the growth of breast cancer.
The study also indicated that Anastrozole is the preferred medical therapy for postmenopausal women with localized breast cancer that is estrogen receptor (ER) positive, where the risk of recurrence was reduced to 40%, and ER negative patients also benefited with this drug. This medicine has proven to be effective in the off-label use of reducing estrogens in women and estradiol in men. Excess estradiol in men can cause benign prostatic hyperplasia, gynecomastia, and symptoms of hypogonadism.
