Breast Augmentation, Lift, Or Both?

Breast Augmentation, Lift, Or Both?

Women who are looking to improve the look and shape of their breasts have many decisions to make

. One of the first is whether they would do best with a breast augmentation procedure or a lift surgery. Sometimes, the answer is not one or the other. Sometimes it is both.

Breast augmentation involves the insertion of implants to make the breasts look larger and fuller. Often this procedure also ends up lifting the breasts a little, but the ultimate goal is not to lift but to enlarge or reshape.

This procedure works well for women who have lost volume due to age, breastfeeding, or pregnancy, or are simply genetically smaller than average. It can also be used to even out breasts that are naturally disproportionate.

A lift does not focus on size, but rather on position. This procedure removes some of the tissue to put the breasts in a more natural position. Sometimes a bit of size is lost, but this may not be noticeable when the breasts have drifted south significantly.

This procedure works well for women who have found their breasts sinking lower and lower on their frame as they age. Drooping breasts are a result of the force of gravity as well as the changes that happen to a woman when she is bearing and nursing babies.

Often, women will opt for a combination of procedures. They start with the lift, placing the breasts in a more natural, "perky" position. They then have the surgeon also perform a breast augmentation, increasing their size and volume. The end result is a look that is closer to the look they had in their youth, if not a little bit larger. The breasts are in a normal position and are a nice size for the woman's frame.

So how can you tell which procedure is right for you? The answer is through a detailed consultation with your plastic surgeon. Your surgeon will help you evaluate your frame, your breasts, and your goals for surgery and choose the right procedure or combination of procedures to help you attain those goals.

Keep in mind that your surgeon's suggestions may be different than what you are thinking will be best. Listen to his suggestions, because he has been performing these surgeries for many years and has experience with what looks great and what does not. However, if you feel that your thoughts and your surgeons are incredibly different from one another, take the time to ask a lot of questions. You want to be fully comfortable with your decision and what to expect as an outcome before you go under the knife.

If your surgeon feels that a combination of breast augmentation and lift is best, then do the two procedures at the same time. This will limit your recovery period, pain, and time off work or regular activities. You will also find that you are happiest with your results when you can see them all at the same time.
