Exploring the Magic Amboro National Park
Amboro National Park is a 630,000 hectares nature reserve, northwest of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The park is one of the last pristine and untouched wilderness in the world.
Nowhere else on earth can you see such a diverse ecological system. The park lies within three distinct ecosystems: the foothills of the Andes, thenorthern Chaco and the Amazon Basin.
Since Amboro National Park borders different ecosystems, there is an abundance of wildlife. The park is home to thousands of animals, such as several species of monkeys, jaguars, river otters, deer and many other mammals native to the Amazon. The rare Spectacled Bear is also found here, which is the only species of bear found in South America. Also, the park contains some recently discovered Inca ruins, not all of which have been excavated.
Park researchers have recorded over 800 species of birds that have been discovered and only half of the park has been explored, making it a great place for birdwatchers. The park is also known to contain more butterflies than anywhere else on earth.
Amboro National Park is great for people who can "rough it" for a few days and want a taste of nature. It is a great place for an adventure to hike and explore the endless waterfalls and natural swimming holes with crystalline water.
Getting There
Amboro National Park is about a three hour drive northwest of Santa Cruz just off the main road to Cochabamba. Along the road you'll find the town of Buena Vista, which serves as a hub for exploring the park. It is probably best to see the park through a tour company or to hire a travel guide who knows the area well.
From Buena Vista, there are some small towns near Buena Vista that have access to the park. You can take a daily morning bus that goes south on a road along the Rio Surutu for several miles. The bus stops along three small towns that have access to the park.
Another option is from the town of Yapacani, which is off the main road between Santa Cruz-Cochabamba and just a few miles northwest of Buena Vista. From the town of Yapacani there is a south trail that can taken by 4WD vehicles and the trail leads into the park where there is a park campsite called Macanucu.
From Samaipata, the park can also be accessed from the south off of the old Santa Cruz-Cochabamba road. Although, it is a good idea to have a 4WD vehicle and guide if taking this route.
