After high school, Pettit accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Louisiana State University (LSU). There, he became a 3 time All-Southeastern Conference selection and a 2 time All American. Pettit was selected in the 1st round as the 2nd overall pick of the 1954 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Hawks. He quickly silenced his critics and won the NBA 'Rookie of the Year' Award in 1955 after averaging 20.4 points and 13.8 rebounds per game. He also played in his 1st All-Star Game and earned the 1st of his 10 consecutive selections to the All-NBA First Team. The next season, the Hawks moved to St. Louis. In 1957, the Hawks were able to reach the NBA Finals versus the Boston Celtics, but were defeated in a thrilling 7 game series that featured a 2 point margin, 2 OT (over time) game in the series clincher. The following season, the Hawks again faced the rival Celtics in the NBA Finals, but this time Pettit led the St. Louis Hawks to an NBA Championship.Bob Pettit Bio
