Boating Etiquette: Dos And Don'ts

, it doesn't necessarily mean you're ready to take a boat out. While it's important that you know all of the safety requirements and procedures associated with boating, you also need to know something about etiquette. Whether you're in open water or at the marina, you need to be considerate and conscious of other boaters.The primary thing to think about when you're underway is your wake. You are responsible for any damages your wake may cause to other boaters, so don't be reckless. When you overtake a smaller vessel, slow down as much as possible so you don't rock the other craft. On the other hand, if you're being overtaken by a faster boat, you should slow down as well. A passing boat needs about a two knot lead, so if you're moving at eight knots, the other vessel has to go about ten. If, however, you slow down to four knots, the other boat can also slow down to about six, leaving a much milder wake. If you are passing sailing boats, try to pass astern in a crossing or overtake them well to leeward so you don't block the wind. Let courtesy govern your actions--whether you're passing or being passed.
When you approach a harbor, proceed slowly. The first boat in has the right to choose the swing radius. Keep a safe distance from other boats; a changing wind can tangle your lines if you're too close. If you're using a spotlight, be careful about where you shine it. You don't want to blind a neighbor. Also, choose a spot to anchor based on what you'll be doing. If you're going to have a party on board, you might want to tie up a decent distance away from other boats. Remember that many boaters go to bed early, and sound travels quickly over water, so be careful about how much noise you make and what you say!
When you're fueling up, don't go somewhere else and leave your boat tied to the fuel dock. Other boats may be waiting to fill up. After following the proper fueling procedures, pay for the gas and move to another docking area so the spot is free. Be sure to keep the area around your slip clean and orderly. You don't want other people tripping over your lines and tackle. Return any marina equipment immediately after you're done using it, so that others can have a turn.
