The most important thing to decide is what will be the end use of the boat

. Are you interested in fishing (inland waterways or offshore), water-skiing, hanging out, exercise, day cruising on inland waters, coastal cruising or long distance cruising. Each of these activities points to different types of boats.

Small fishing boats to be used on inland waters can be propelled by either a small outboard motor or oars. You can use these boats for exercise or just hanging out on the water. They are typically 8 to 15 feet in length and are of an open design. Some larger boats may have covered storage. Small, open sail boats in the 10 to 14 foot range are good for harbor sailing.

Boat used for skiing are usually 15 to 25 feet in length and are propelled by powerful outboard or inboard-outboard motors. These boats are designed to move fast in order to pull a skier. They are generally open but sometimes have small covered areas.

Boats designed for cruising tend to be larger with some enclosed area for sleeping. Twenty feet would be about the smallest boat for comfortable inland cruising and 30 feet plus for offshore cruising. Boats designed as daysailers can be in the 18 foot range.Boat Building With Wooden Boat Plans


When you know the type and size of the boat you want to build you must then decide on what material to use in producing the boat. There are many different types of boat construction material including wood, fiberglass, steel, aluminum and even concrete. What you choose depends on your own ability and the tools you have available.

Building with fiberglass requires some mold making capability or else you can build a wooden boat and cover it with fiberglass. Working with fiberglass requires some skill and protective clothing is necessary when working with the chemicals and glass cloth.

Steel and aluminum building requires welding and other metal working abilities. Aluminum construction demands very specialized welding talents that most home builders do not have. Steel is generally used for larger boat construction.

Building with wood is probably the least difficult for the first time boat builder. Many wooden boat plans are available for the new wood boat builder and tools and materials are are available locally. A well written set of wooden boat plans will will take you step by step through the entire process. Tools can be obtained at the local hardware store and the materials, especially for beginning boat construction, are available at any good lumber yard.

If you are a beginner, a small runabout, rowboat or day-sailer would be a good choice. It is also important that you select the best wooden boat plans available.
