Boarding your pet

It's that time again! You are going on a trip and you need to board your pet.

There are a few important things to consider before you go. Perhaps the most important is to ensure that your pet is up to date on all its shots: such as rabies, DHLPP-Distemper, Hepatitis (CAV-2), Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus (combined canine vaccine) just to name a few. There are some ailments that are quite contagious and a quick shot might protect your pooch. Bordatella, for example, will lessen the likelihood of your pet getting "Kennel Cough". Kennel cough is highly contaigous and causes inflammation of the upper respiratory system.

Perhaps the price of boarding is a concern for you. Make sure you contact your veterinarian first. Many vets board and besides, you want your pet to be with people you know is at all possible.

Another thing to consider is your pets' diet. Many kennels require that you leave the pet enough food to sustain them while you are gone. The bennefit to this is that your pet keeps the same diet. This is helpful if they happen to be a very picky eater. The same rule applies if your pet is on medication. You will be required to leave a sufficient amount and of course inform the vet and/or pet boarding staff of how to administer the meds.

Finally, separation anxiety leaves some pets upset. One way to calm them is to leave a little an item with your scent on it. Something like a small blanket or part of your clothing will be very comforting to them. Signs of separation anxiety include drooling, excessive barking, excessive elimination, and destructiveness. There are some over the counter separation anxiety remedies you can buy at your local pet store or at your local Petsmart and Petco.
