You might know this by a different name like subscription service or membership, but many large companies are using this business model to make a ton of money. The principle is simple enough. You sign up to receive your gift with the understanding that you will be locked into a fixed term contract. You will be billed every month for the service until you cancel. In some examples you receive a gift that may have cost the company $20 and for the next 18 months you get to pay them $60 every month. Regardless of which solution you decide to go with, the whole point is to automate as much of the subscription signup and content delivery as you possibly can. If you're content is of a time sensitive nature, then you will obviously have to produce this content once a month or once a week or whatever your market has paid for. Depending on the market you're catering to this could even mean that you might need to generate fresh content on a daily basis. Be sure to do some research ahead of time so you have a good idea of what you're getting into before you start.

If you're selling a subscription to content that won't change significantly over time e.g. a six month course teaching you how to play guitar, then content delivery can be totally automatic. You'll then have the option to either release lessons one at a time or just give your subscribers access to the entire course and let them go through it at their own pace. So you could conceivably release 2 new lessons to customers every week. Often your members or students will prefer to receive your lessons this way, since the small bite size chunks of information are less intimidating, which may in turn result in more students truly consuming your content.

So as you can see, adding a membership component to your existing site or starting a subscription based online service from scratch can be a very lucrative business model on the internet. It will take some tools to set up and some time to create the content but you can end up with a very sustainable business model by creating excellent value to what will hopefully become very happy customers.
