Belize City is the largest city in Belize Country and its former capital
. The city was almost destroyed by a huge hurricane back in 1961 and the capital was moved to the city of Belmopan and has remained there ever since. Now Belize City is home to more than 70,000 people and is considered the largest urban area of the country.Although important progress was made, Belize City has work to do when it comes to crime. Tourists are targeted in some areas of the city and thefts or even muggings are quite common. Travel in large groups when visiting the city especially during the evening and night and be sure to stick to the central areas. Do not go to places that you do not know and make sure to employ the services of a trusted guide. As always, keep your cash in the hotel safe or in the hotel room and only take with you what you consider necessary. Make sure to keep your ID and papers with you, but in a secured place and never give them to somebody except an official of the state. Another great tip is to leave your jewelry at home and to keep a low profile while visiting the city.
Start your visit to Belize City with a trip to the Belize City Zoo. This is a great place for kids to have fun and learn about various indigenous animals. The exhibits include jaguars, ocelots, margays, and even white-nosed coatis. Together with the Tropical Education Center and the Primate Sanctuary the zoo hosts more than 300 animals, most of them orphaned or abandoned, while some were born at the zoo.
The Museum of Belize is another great place to visit. The museum building was once a prison where some of the meanest criminals were kept. Now the museum hosts a collection of artifacts dating from the Mayan times and a large area dedicated to the more recent history of Belize Country.
Old Belize is home to the famous Cucumber Beach, one of the best sandy beaches in the country. Waterslides, swimming, or boat rides will keep your water addiction satisfied while your scenic needs will be satisfied by a zip line ride.
The Altun Ha site is just 50 km north of Belize City. Altun Ha is one of the best conserved Mayan temple complexes in the world. The excavations are revealing new artifacts each day while uncovering new and interesting sanctuaries and tombs . Here you can visit Mayan temples and take a look at some of the artifacts recovered from the site.
No trip to Belize is complete without a visit to the exotic Cockscomb Basin. This nature reserve is home to some of the best preserved tropical jungles in the world. Together with the rivers, the lakes, the waterfalls and the forests, the entire Cockscomb Basin will take you on a tropical adventure that you will never forget. This natural park has a total surface of more than 400 square kilometers and it is currently a living sanctuary for one of the most worshiped animal of the Mayans, the American Jaguar.
