. The first thing that I want to let you know is that this dog makes an incredible addition to any family. My least favorite part about these dogs is that their lifespan is about seven years, which if you do not know is four lower than the norm for a dog of their size. Ultimately they are known for their amazing strength and kindness towards people. If you provide them with a suitable diet, they will lead an incredibly healthy life also. Like any other dog though, they've some issues that you'll need to take care of or make sure they do not have before purchasing.One of the initial issues you'll want to make sure that your leonberger doesn't have is aggression issues. A leonberger breed with aggression issues is quite rare but still look out as its possible. The reasons for an aggressive dog period are: mean past owner, very traumatizing experience when it was a little puppy, or poor training. Any dog would be at least somewhat aggressive when faced with any of those issues, but we are talking about a fairly large dog so this could get quite dangerous if you ignore the signs of aggression without getting it professional help.
The next thing you need to find out about your new pet candidate, if its already a grown up, if it had early socialization and other forms of training. Socialization is particularly needed for if it'll be around children. You don't want your dog getting angry at children for not leaving him alone one too many times. To prevent this from happening you should teach the kids as well as the dog how to treat each other. If your dog you are looking at is an older one, you can hire an expert to make sure it is obediant and get it help if it needs it. This won't be the least expensive in the world but will make your bond with your dog that much stronger. So if you need to avoid this all together find one that's already around a lot of people.
Thankfully the leonberger breed doesn't need the most space, especially in comparison to their size. Walking a leonberger everyday is a big thing for them since they are so active with energy all day. Even if you don't have time to take them on a long walk, they appreciate getting out of the house and are a lot more well behaved because of getting out and getting some exercise. Since the leonberger is such as smart dog, they desire some type of mental stimulation also which can be achieved through various thinking toy for dogs. If you cannot find any at your local pet store that meet the criterea a quick search on the internet will provide you with some really inexpensive options you could check out.
In conclusion they're an amazing breed of dog that are very loyal and beautiful. I am confident that they will make a great addition to your family. When trained and treated properly they'll get along with people and children, while leading long and healthy lives.
