Beekeepers Deliver Different Forms Of Honey
Packaging honey is fairly simple. When you buy your honey from any beekeeper, even beginning beekeepers, there are a variety of ways that you can purchase that honey. It is sold in many different forms. You can choose to buy a fresh honeycomb, raw honey, heat-treated honey, and organic honey. If you decide to purchase your honey right from the source, you will be eating healthy, and you will be promoting a healthier environment. Here are a few of the types of honey you can purchase.
Honeycomb
Honeybees actually package their own honey. Many beekeepers sell honeycomb right from the hive. In fact, before honey extraction machines became available, this is how most honey was marketed, but it is difficult to find unless you get it straight from the beekeepers. When you bite into a honeycomb, which is made out of beeswax and is edible, the wax seals that these made to keep the honey in are broken, and the honey simply flows into your mouth.
There is another kind of honeycomb sold. It is cut comb or chunk honey. The beekeeper cuts pieces of the honeycomb and puts them into a jar. Liquid honey and honeycomb float freely together.
Raw honey
Raw honey is the product that you get when the wax covering on the cells is cut off and the honey is allowed to drain. Raw honey may contain some wax particles and pollen. If sold commercially, it may have a minimum of processing using low heat and still be called raw honey.
Organic honey
In order to be called organic, the honey must adhere to strict guidelines. The main one is that the hives must be on property that is certified organic. The area around the hives for a distance of 4 miles in all directions must have only organic crops or untreated wildflowers growing. The area cannot have any roads or urban centers or areas where waste can be deposited or any other types of contaminants.
Pasteurized or heat treated honey
You can purchase honey that is pasteurized, but this is totally unnecessary. Pasteurized honey is sold because there has been a demand for it from people who think that the honey will be safer if treated by processing with heat. The truth is however, honey does not support the growth of bacteria. It is a naturally safe food.
Liquid honey
Liquid honey is the most popular form of honey. Beekeepers remove the honeycomb from the hives, then they cut off the layer of wax seals the cells. They then put the comb into an extractor to remove the liquid honey. At this point the honey can be sent to market, however, it may have a slightly cloudy appearance. For this reason, many beekeepers will run their honey through a filter of fine mesh. This filter removes any wax particles and propolis, leaving just the clear liquid honey.
