Beating The Summer Heat - The Paris Way!

Beating The Summer Heat - The Paris Way!

In 2002, the mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoe came up with a remarkable idea for locals

and foreigners alike in Paris, to overcome the heat of summer as well as to truly celebrate summer.

This was in the form of creating beaches or Plages as it is known in French (man-made beaches) for a period of 4 weeks, which would give everyone a chance to just sit back and relax. The beaches created at different locations incorporated different themes in order to attract the interests of a diverse range of people.

The first of these beaches was created along the Seine River and spans a distance of over 3 kilometers. Tropical Ambiance is the theme for this beach. 2000 tons of fine sand covers what is usually a motor way; palm trees sway in the wind and deck chairs are laid out. A large swimming pool is a new addition that has proved to be a favourite with the old and young alike. This spot also hosts a concert stage and the open air area is used for activities such as tai-chi, wall climbing and rollerblading.

The second beach is more of an intellectual summer activity spot. Set below the Francois Mitterrand National Library, at Port de la Gare, this spot offers its visitors a loan of books, free newspapers, free Wi-Fi access, writing and drawing activities etc. The boats moored on the lake offer musical entertainment as well.

The third was opened in 2007. This focuses on water sports and adventurous activities, with its location alongside the Bassin de la Villette. Dinghies, kayaks, pedal boats and rowing boats are on offer along the quays for those looking for some water-bound excitement.

All these beaches offer various kinds of refreshment options and whilst focus is on providing a wholesome summer experience, beating the heat is also a main priority.

If travellers seek to base themselves in a hotel in Paris, then a Paris city centre hotel, such as Millennium Hotel Paris Opera, should be looked at to make the most of the Paris Plage.
