Bearded dragon diet

The bearded dragon dietary needs may surprise you. Bearded dragons are omnivorous so they need both vegetables and insects for their food. The feeding necessities of your dragon will require your efforts in traveling to the pet store often to provide the proper nutrition. They should have a good variety of foods that may include crickets and finely chopped leafy greens. It is best to avoid too much iceburg lettuce and similar lettuces since they offer little nutritional value. Good vegetables to feed your dragon include mustard greens, collard greens, parsley, dandelion greens and dandelion flowers, kale, arugula and endives. Spinach is not a good idea because it can slow down the ability to digest other foods and too much of it is not good.

You can also feed your dragon finely chopped squash, carrots, peas, zucchini, peppers, apples, pears and other fruits and vegetables. Keep in mind that they do also need a good amount of insects in their diet so keep some crickets, meal worms and perhaps hissing cockroaches on hand as well. It is best to get the foods you feed to your pet from the store as you may not be aware of the potential poisons in food gathered around home. Even when you don't treat your lawn with pesticides, crickets from your own yard may be infected with it from another lawn that is treated. The same kind of contamination can happen with plants so be sure that you are not harvesting plants locally that are treated.

If you are going to forage for the food of your pet dragon then it is best to do so away from public areas. If you live near a wilderness area such as desert or mountains then you can take a hike to gather such food for your dragon if you prefer this to the store. Just keep in mind that you should take precautions with this food gathering just as you would if you were gathering it for yourself.
