Historically Speaking

Mangalore which derives its name from a local Hindu goddess Mangladevi has a rich historical past. Its strategic location on the coast ensured Mangalore"s pre-eminence as an important trading port since antiquity. There are references to Mangalore in the historical accounts of Ptolemy and Pliny.

Historical evidence reveals that till the 14th century, the Alpa dynasty held sway over Mangalore, establishing it as their capital city. Subsequently sever other dynasties including the Kadambas, Alupas, Western Chalukyas, Hoysalas and the Rastrakutas ruled over Mangalore. In 1520, the Portuguese captured Mangalore and occupied it. However, by 1695, the Arabs at established themselves here. In 1763, Hyder Ali the King of Mysore conquered Mangalore. With the advent of the British, Mangalore was annexed to the British Empire. Tipu Sultan overthrew the British in 1794 but with his defeat at Seringapatnam, Mangalore once again came under the British. Events

Kambla , or buffalo races held in December is unique to Mangalore. When the paddy fields are full of water, the buffaloes are brought sleek and shining for this very important event in the year"s calendar. Water and mud spraying all over, the buffaloes charge off towards the finish line.

the thousand year old Mangaladevi Temple after which the city is named. Be sure to stop by the Kadri Sri Manjunatha Temple, dating back to 1086 AD which houses a stunning statue of God Lokeshwara. At Boloor, is the impressive Sultan Battery, a watchtower built by the legendary Tipu Sultan. Children will particularly enjoy Kadri Park with its beautiful gardens and rides. If sand and sun is what you seek, head to the nearby beaches of Ullal, Taneerbhavi and Panambur. Mudabidri consisits of 18 Jain bastis and 15th century Chandranatha temple or the fascinating 1000-pillar hall. The settlement is located at a distance of 35 kms from the city centre and is a good spot for sightseeing. Karkal also is known for its significant 13the century temples and 13m high Bahubali statue which is situated on a small hillock on the outskirts of the town. You can get excellent vistas of the Western Ghats from this spot.

How to get there by Air

Mangalore International Airport located approximately 20 kilometers north-east from the center of the Mangalore city, near Bajpe. This airport offers domestic flights to Goa, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Chennai and Kozhikode. International services are provided by Air-India Express to Doha, Kuwait,

Sharjah, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, and Muscat.

How to get there by Rail

Mangalore is a major railway junction and is well connected to the rest of India by several trains. The main station is the Mangalore Central Railway Station (Mangalore Railway Station) in the heart of the city. You can catch the Malabar Express, Mangalore Mail, Parasuram Express and Matsyagandha

How to get there by Bus
