Be Responsible For Your Comfort During Summer
We're now a little more than a week into August
, and I can't help daydreaming about the fall season that seems so far away. After growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, I know that the summer season often extends into the very last days of September, but the worst of it hits in mid-August.That is why it is so important to know your best options for constantly keeping your home comfortable for the remainder of the season. This can be difficult when you have a shoddy Houston air conditioning unit and/or you don't have complete control over that unit. Allow me to give you some advice as to how to approach your comfort during the blazing heat of summer.
One of the first things you need to ensure is that your home is well-insulated. Most people don't realize how much money they are wasting when their windows and doors--along with other outlets, like attics--are not equipped with adequate weather stripping or other appropriate insulation.
Visit your local home improvement store and consult with a sales representative for some advice on what will suit your home's needs best. If you don't feel confident installing weather stripping yourself, you may want to use the internet to do some research on local companies that can provide superior insulation for your windows and doors.
If you own a single-family home, then you have control over your own unit, in which case you should have it regularly inspected and serviced. This will keep it running more efficiently and smoothly every year, making your family comfortable summer after summer.
Select a company that you can trust to do this, as many maintenance men are likely to tell you that your unit needs to be replaced when there is, in fact, a simple fix for several common problems, which is much less expensive in the long run than going for a replacement, which can cost ten grand or more!
My spouse and I live in a townhouse, and our unit actually supplies cooling to the whole building, which includes about seven homes. When the air conditioner has troubles, we do not have the option of calling a repairman.
But we do have the opportunity to be involved with our Home Owners' Association to understand the procedures we must follow when we notice a problem. We can also understand the costs, including whether or not we will be charged an assessment for the repairs.
If you live in a condo, apartment, or townhouse, you should be similarly involved. You may also want to invest in a portable air conditioning unit.
