Basics On Heat Treatment Of Aluminium

Heat treatment is quite a common kind of treatment

, which is given to metals. Speaking of metals, mostly steel is treated to such a treatment, followed by aluminium. Aluminium alloy is also given heat treatment in order to increase its strength. Heat treatment of aluminium alloy includes three basic steps, like solution heat treating, where the soluble phases get dissolved, quenching which is nothing but the development of something known as super saturation, and age hardening, which is the precipitate from the atoms acting as solute at either room temperature or at an elevated temperature. If it is done at room temperature, then it would be natural aging, and if it is done in elevated temperature, then it would be artificial heating.

The heating of aluminium makes it stronger and harder. In case of aluminium, unlike some metals and its alloys, significant results can be obtained by following this process of heat treatment. Those metals and its alloys, which cannot be treated with heat, are mostly dependant on the work done during the cold phase in order to increase their strength. The important system of aluminium alloys, which come with precipitation hardening, would take in account the aluminum-copper set up strengthened by CuAl2, , aluminum-magnesium-silicon set up gaining strength from Mg2Si , aluminium copper-magnesium set up made strong by aluminum-zinc-magnesium-copper structure. Now, let us look into the detailed heat treatment process of aluminium and its alloys.

The first step in treating aluminium to some heat would be annealing. This process is primarily followed in order to soften the metal or its alloys. Annealing can again be of two kinds, complete and partial. These two kinds of annealing are used in case of those alloys, which cannot be treated with heat. An exception in this case would be the alloys of 5000 series, which are given a low temperature stabilization treatment at times. The producer generally carries out this kind of treatment. Depending on the metal and its alloy, the process of annealing is done in the range of 300-410C. The heating time at this temperature slot varies between 0.5 to 3 hours, depending on the type of the alloy, and the load size. The rate of cooling after this process is completed is not that critical.

Solution heat treatment is another process used to treat metals and its alloys. This involves such a kind of treatment process in which the alloying constituents are taken in the solution form, and their form is retained by means of rapid quenching. Subsequent treatment is then given out at low temperatures. The type of metal and the furnace load would decide the time at temperature. Enough time must be given in case of taking the alloys into their solution form. The solution treatment is crucial in making this process a success. The furnace temperature and the special temperature should be controlled in a range of 5C for most of the alloys.

Quenching is another very crucial process, which is involved, in this sort of metal treatment. The final process of treating metals to heat would be age hardening, which is achieved either by natural means or by artificial means. With all of these processes, metals have attained a whole new look and function these days.
