Barcelona - A Destination For Travellers On A Budget

Barcelona - A Destination For Travellers On A Budget

To eat cheaply look out for restaurants serving menu del dia

, a great way to try provincial cuisine in the region. There is always something to suit everyone, and meals generally include starters' and not one, but two main courses with desserts and a glass of wine or coffee thrown in too. The problem with menu del dia is that it will probably fill you up for the rest of the day, but if you still feel peckish after long hours spent sightseeing then make your way to Buenas Migas and taste the delicious focaccias, gourmet coffee, and other all day snacks from as little as 4 or 5 EUR.

When eating and drinking out in Barcelona you need to be alert to a number of things, always confirm if the menu price includes a value added tax to start with as it makes a difference of 7 % to the total of your bill. Some places charge an additional sum if you want bread, or 'pan', so it can save you money if you're just aware of these hidden extras. With a habit of taking midday siesta's it can be hard to find a good eating place or even a shop open at certain times of the day. Whatever you do don't sling your bag or jacket on the chair if eating on the terrace of a restaurant as it just might disappear, and don't panic about how much to tip the waiting staff as it's just as acceptable to leave some coins as it is to leave nothing.

If you plan your travels ahead of time then you can investigate all the free places to visit and which museums don't charge an entry fee. There are literally hundreds of museums here; some are free for visitors every day, while others have an entry fee on particular days. The National Art Gallery of Catalonia, Museu Nacional D'Art de Catalunya, gives free entrance to anyone under 15 and over 65, the rest have to pay, although any visitor on the first Sunday of each month gets in for nothing. By night the gallery astounds with a fantastic water and light display organised by the Magic Fountain of Montjuic, but really it's the fine art and many other interesting collections that will keep you occupied in the city for as long as you can spare!

The MACBA is officially known as the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona and is known for its free workshops held in one of the auditoriums in the building. This is a great place to come and chill as they have various rooms where you can go and read its fascinating and interesting array of periodicals, books and delve into the archives, all totally free for everyone to look at. Some of the finest sculpture and art pieces in Barcelona are not even to be found in the museums, check out the Botanical Gardens, Montjuic, and Parc d'en Castell de l'Oreneta for great art. One of the principal parks in the city is Parc de la Ciutadella, which is particularly inviting as it offers the ideal location to chill amongst the trees, flowers and sprawling grounds, Parc Guell ia also stimulating for the senses as it's brimming with dreamy sculptures and is a wonderful place to spend the day. Parc Guell is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also known as the works of Antoni Gaudi, with odd arrangements evocative of shapes of nature, many of the city parks are free and offer shelter away from the commotion of the city.

Current structures compete with early ones side by side, and sticking up and out where it just can't be missed is Jean Nouvel's gorgeously glittering tower, The Torre Agbar which soars into the sky exceeding 34 stories and well over 142 meters in height.

As long as you plan in advance you won't have a problem finding some activity, landscape or monument to fill the days exploring, and there are numerous reasonably priced apartementen Barcelona to rent if you want to get more out of your money and really enjoy this remarkable capital.
