Baby Boomers On The Move
After World War II, soldiers came home ready to to start or increase their families
. This led to the population explosion commonly referred to as "baby boomers." These are babies born between 1946 and 1960, today they are between the ages of almost 50 years to mid sixties. Approximately 76 million Americans were born during this time period, which has been called the "Greatest Generation of Americans."
It is interesting to note that 36% of Baby Boomers plan to move when they become empty nesters. The large houses they raised their children in are no longer necessary. They want freedom from high mortgages and freedom with their time to pursue hobbies, travel or other pursuits, 62% state their top reason for moving is less maintenance. Some have paid off their homes and will use the equity after downsizing for retirement. Surprisingly, 71% of Boomers say they are ready emotionally to take on the roll of Empty Nesters.
After spending a large percentage of their income raising and caring for their families, empty nesters are anxious and willing to sacrifice to get out of debt. Retirement is looming closer and they hope to maintain a similar standard of living, even if on a smaller scale. After investing all there resource into their children it is interesting to note that 40% of Boomers believe their children will do better financially than they did. This is a good thing as the children may have to help support their parents as this group will retire in mass in a few years.
Active senior communities are hardly able to keep up with the demand. Small or large individual developments provide lawn care, pools, club houses, tennis courts, social events and many walking paths for their residence. The need to stay active and independent is huge goal for the boomers, they don't want to be a burden to their children. There are active communities to fit every every life style, some are centrally located around a golf course, others like the college town or university communities, there are artists communities popping up and of course marina and boating communities.
As baby boomers move into this new phase of life, they better call the senior moving services and prepare themselves for their new life without their children. The children are gone, the house has been downsized, they are ready for an happy, healthy, active life.
