Automobile Shock Absorbers

Automobile Shock Absorbers

Shocks and shock absorbers are two commonly used names for same device

. It a mechanical device used to smooth out a sudden shock impulse. Shocks are basically oil pumps. Piston is an important part of this device. As the oscillation starts, the hydraulic fluid is pressed through orifices (tine holes) inside the piston. Piston slows down and slows the spring and suspension movement in turn.

Velocity sensitive hydraulic damping devices are the part of all modern vehicles. It provides as much resistance as faster the suspension. With the introduction of these devices, shock absorbers reduces the rate of sway, bounce and beak dive and acceleration squat.

Different designs (types) of Shock Absorbers

Some of the most commonly used types are given below:Automobile Shock Absorbers

- Mono Tube Shocks

- Twin Tube Shocks

> Gas Charged Twin Tube

> Position sensitive damping (PSD) Twin Tube

> Acceleration sensitive damping (ASD) Twin Tube

- Air shock absorber

- Damper shock absorber

> Mono Tube Damper

> Twin Tube Damper

> Low Pressure Gas Filled Twin Tube Damper

> High Pressure Gas Filled Mono Tube Damper

> Linear Damper

- Spring shock absorber

General Features of Shock Absorbers

Some of the general features of the shock absorbers are as follows:

1.Many of the modern vehicles shocks are made from sintered metal. This is a strong metal, which provides resistance and long lasting life to the shocks.

2.Shock observers contain special seals, which preserve the fluid in and all impurities out.

3.Cylinders are mostly made from flat metals usually welded at the seam.

4.Velocity sensitive shocks are commonly used in modern vehicles, which help in better resistance against bumps.

Check whether shocks need replacing

Whenever you hit a bump, car shocks absorb the oscillation or up and down motion formed by the springs. If your car continues to bounce shows that your shocks are no more capable of absorbing the shocks. Shocks not only make the drive safe but also provide good control over a car. Worn out shocks are not only dangerous but also make drive uncomfortable. It is important to keep your shocks in order else you and your vehicle may have an unwanted scenario. Hereunder are given three steps simple test to check your shocks condition:

- Grasp any one corner of the car bumper

- Apply downward force as much as you can

Observe the movement of the bumper. If it moved up and gone down again. If it continuously oscillates, means you are need to change the shocks. Apply same procedure on all the remaining three corners.

There are certain other essentials, which you need to keep in mind regarding the maintenance of the shocks.

- Leaks

- Any sign of dents on shock body

- Ragged bushes

- Small holes in the piston rod (pitted piston rod)

- Irregular tires condition
