Australian Parliament Still On A Tightrope

Australian Parliament Still On A Tightrope

With the elections now finished in Australia, immigration observers are now closely following the aftermath

. Indeed, with immigrations being one of the central issues in the concluded elections, this one is vital for a lot of people hoping to enter the country. As can be recalled, current Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard called for elections last July 17 and the whole thing was carried out on Aug. 21. With the results coming in as early as the 23rd, it became obvious that neither the Labor Party nor the Liberal Coalition was able to gain a majority, with both getting 72 seats each in the House of Representatives, as of last tally. What this has resulted in is a so called hung parliament. Under this situation, the current ruling party (in this case, Labor) will still be the ruling party, with Julia Gillard still serving as Prime Minister. However, this is only in a caretaker capacity, up until the leadership issue has been resolved. With that in mind, both parties are now in a race to convince the five unaligned candidates, four independents and a Greens (another major political party in Australia) member, to swing into their favor and allow them to form a minority government. The Greens member, Adam Bandt, has since said that he will align himself with the Labor Party in the case of a hung parliament. On the other hand, the four independents have yet to declare their alignment. Independent Representative Rob Oakeshoott has said that he will move in with the party that will be able to establish a stable government. This also goes with another independent, Tony Windsor. The two other independents have yet to comment on the matter. There have been a clamor from various sectors to conduct yet another election to resolve the hung parliament (which is allowed under Australias election rules). However, Gillard rejected the idea. She instead said that she will instead strive to set up a stable minority in order to continue her work. She also stressed that the result of the elections is a clear indication that the Australia political landscape is now changing and that it is necessary for her to conform with it. Indeed, many observers have noted that the results of the elections represent a significant shift away from both parties. They are now seeing that a coalition between the two parties is a more likely scenario. They also see this as a good way of resolving many other issues in the country.
