Australia's Most Iconic Landmarks

Australia has several iconic landmarks that without them the Land Down Under will never be the same. A combination of natural and man-made wonders, these attractions have generated millions of revenues and thousands of visitors to the country.

Great Barrier Reef

This is considered to be the biggest coral network in the world today. Found in Queensland it is composed of more than 850 islands and over 3,000 coral reefs. It's extremely massive astronauts can see them in the outer space. Because of its incredible beauty it became a World Heritage Site and was awarded one of the Seven Natural Wonders all over the world. Of course, this is one of the most favorite snorkeling and diving sites in the country.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

This by far is the biggest bridge with steel arch in the world. It is more than 134 meters above the harbour of Sydney and has 8 vehicle lanes. On the average more than 200,000 vehicles make use of the bridge on a daily basis. A very popular and thrilling activity you can look forward to is the BridgeClimb. It allows you to go up to several hundreds of meters above the harbour. Up in the bridge you can see not only the panoramic view of Sydney but also of the nearby towns and villages including Gold Coast. A guided audio tour accompanies the climb, telling you very interesting pieces of information of the famous landmarks you can see.

Lake Eyre

Unknown to many Australia has vast and arid deserts, where waters is almost non-existent. Among its midst is Lake Eyre. It is the largest lake in the country; however, because of constant water evaporation, mineralization occurred. Thus, for most of the times, Eyre Lake is the largest salt lake in the country.

There are not too many activities you can do within Lake Eyre itself. However, you can set up tent in Muloorina. You can also bushwalk or take a hike to Oodnadatta track, where you can catch a more splendid view of the salt lake.

Swan Bells

The Bell Tower in Perth is home to the Swan Bells, an accumulation of more than a dozen of historical sounding bells. The Swan Bells campanile is huge, measuring 82 meters in height, and is made of copper and glass. Twelve of the bells came from St. Martin-in-the-Fields and date back to the fourteenth century. All bells are completely operational, though they are not played together.

Uluru

Europeans call it the Ayres Rock. Regardless, Uluru is one of the biggest monoliths all over the world, with majority of it found underneath the ground. It is also a sacred ground for the Aborigines. There are several interesting plant species found in Uluru. It sits close to the Olgas, where you can catch the most magnificent sunset.

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is perhaps Australia's biggest architectural contribution to the world in the twentieth century. It is so beautiful and majestic it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don't be misled by the name, though. Though the opera house definitely has several performances of such, it is also a common venue for other live performances, such as plays, ballets, and concerts.
