Atom A Crushers come up short in Cumberland tournament
The Atom A Crushers came up short in Cumberland's Bluenose Tournament over the weekend.
The Crushers paired up against host team the Cumberland Ramblers in game one early Saturday morning.
Matthew Martin scored the Crushers first goal came at the 4:12 mark of the first period assisted by Eva Wornell. Tyler Green scored next for the crushers assisted by Wayne Denny to take a 2-1 lead.
The Ramblers scored at the 10:03 mark of the first to tie the game at two but the Crushers responded 14 seconds later to regain the lead and conclude the first period with a score of 3-2 Crushers.
The Ramblers took three penalties in the second period of which the Crushers capitalized on two and added two even strength goals for a score of 7-2 at the end of two periods of play. The third period saw one penalty and one goal for each team and a final score of 8-3 Crushers. Other Crusher goals went to Skyler Coady scoring two, Logan Decoste, Joeseph McCarron, Denny and Green getting his second of the game. Assists for Crushers were led by Denny with two. Single assists went to Wornell, Decoste, Matthew Martin, Burke Murray, Connor Murphy and Green.
The Crushers second game played Saturday afternoon had the tables turned. The jaw crusher meet Cap Pele and quickly found themselves trailing when Cap Pele scored 41 seconds into the opening period. Cap Pele's Maxime BoyDreaa's presence was felt throughout the game scoring a total of eight goals out of the 10 Cap Pele goals of which six were unassisted. The Crushers managed to score one in the first and two in the second bringing the final score to 10-3. Crusher goals were lead by Martin who netted two and Jacob Roper adding a single. Assists went to Ben MacDonald and Murphy.
The Crushers battled the Antigonish Atom A Bulldogs Sunday morning in their third and final game of the tournament. The Bulldogs controlled over 35 minutes of a 36-minute game and had the Crushers down by a score of 4-0 with less than a minute remaining in regulation time. The crusher first goal came with 56 seconds remaining in the game and was scored by Green assisted by Denny. Crusher second goal came eight seconds later again scored by Green and assisted by Denny. The Crushers managed to squeeze in one more goal 20 seconds later scored by Denny assisted by Logan Decoste. The Crushers players and bench staff pulled out all the stops in the final 28 seconds, winning the faceoff at center ice, getting the puck deep into the opponent's zone, pulling their goaltender for the extra attacker and generating scoring changes but it was a little too late as the buzzer sounded.
