If you have a clean licence then you are considered less of a risk, but if you were convicted for any speeding offence or any other convictions during the last 3-5 years that would bump up the cost of car insurance. Drink Driving Rehab
From the 1st of January 2000, courts throughout England, Wales and Scotland have an extra sentencing option for drink drive offenders. If you are convicted of an offence involving drinking and driving, the magistrate, or sheriff in Scotland may offer you the opportunity of attending a rehabilitation course. This is a Government approved course, and the completion of a course will entitle you to a reduction of up to a quarter in the period of disqualification. In the case of a one year period of disqualification, the reduction will be three months. The court will decide the length of reduction for longer periods of disqualification.
Speed Driving Workshops
This initiative which is known as Speed Watch, aims to make drivers more aware of the dangers of speeding by showing them the potential consequences of their action. This is in pilot phase at the moment, but expected to be rolled out on national scale subject to success of pilots.
These workshops will be offered to people caught speeding towards the lower end of speeding spectrum such as going over the limit in 30mph zones.
Disqualifications:
If a driver has too many convictions or has a very serious conviction, that person may be disqualified from driving. This is usually when you are caught drink driving, driving uninsured, careless or dangerous driving or could be any other serious conviction that would lead to a disqualification. Depending on the level of conviction you can get a ban from driving, anything from a few days to several years.
A series of minor convictions can cause disqualification which is also known as "Totting Up". This will bump up the price quite significantly and most probably some companies might not even insure you because of it.
You must tell your insurer of any changes in the details you have provided them; such as address, occupation type of car and motoring convictions including fixed penalties.
