Are Dental Implants A Good Solution For Missing Teeth?

Whether due to decay or accident, nobody likes to have missing teeth

. Ones that are easily visible can slowly erode confidence. Both visible and non-visible missing teeth can affect other teeth through shifting, resulting in joint pain or even bite problems. None of this is necessary as there are solutions. Dental implants are available these days that solve all these problems and in many instances are indistinguishable from the real teeth.

Dental implants are an excellent method to replace missing teeth. An artificial root is implanted directly into the bone of the jaw. Typically made of titanium, the artificial root in many ways looks similar to a screw. Some types of implants require a post to be attached to the root or anchor.

Other implants already have the post attached to the anchor. Once this is all finished, the artificial tooth is attached. While it may take several trips to your cosmetic dentist, the result will be a natural looking tooth that will offer years of service. Implants can also be used to support a bridge or even a full set of dentures, resulting in a permanent placement for dentures as opposed to the more common removable dentures that most people are familiar with.

At the most basic level dental implants are semi-permanent replacements while dentures are temporary in the sense that they are removable. Implants are technically removable. The artificial tooth can be removed, adjusted or replaced. The implants inside the bone can be removed or repaired, however what is done after removal would need to be addressed. This is because there would be a hole in the bone of the jaw as well as the problem of a missing tooth.

Dentures are dental fixtures that replicate the appearance and action of teeth but rest on the gums themselves. They are not permanent, are easily removable and can be replaced with far less effort than dental implants. Dentures require no surgery however they will not be as stable or durable as dental implants.

There are numerous health advantages to having a full set of teeth. The first and foremost is a full set of teeth prevents tooth shifting. If a tooth is missing the surrounding teeth can slowly shift into the open space over time. This can result in pain from the migration as well as misaligned teeth. Misalignment can cause joint pain from not being able to close properly in addition to premature wear on opposing teeth.

Tooth decay and gum disease can also follow. Having a full set of teeth through dental implants or dentures can prevent this. Chewing ability, clear speech and digestion all benefit from a full set of teeth.

Of course, a person's smile is much brighter and nice to look at when all teeth are present and accounted for. This can greatly affect a person's image and self confidence, which has ramifications in all aspects of their life.
