When planning to build your own boat, one route to achieve this goal that you may want to look into is that of using a boat building kit
. These contain the pieces of wood that you need to complete the build, already pre cut to the correct size and shape by computers and machines, saving you the time and hassle of doing it all yourself by hand. But, is this the key to plain sailing when building your own boat?If you don't have much experience with woodworking this could be a perfect way to start, both in terms of the actual building the boat itself, plus also learning skills in carpentry. If you think about it, you don't want to bite of more than you can chew the first time round, so this is a perfect introduction.
It is also probably more likely to have a positive outcome and therefore inspire you to take on greater challenges in the long run too. Just because you build with a kit or two to begin with, it doesn't have to mean that is your only possibility moving forward either, so should you get hooked and want to build more boats in the future, you could always move on to build one from scratch when you have developed the necessary skill and expertise.
Another benefit that building a boat using a kit can have, is that you may need to have fewer tools for the build, due to the fact that all, or at least most of the cutting has already been done for you. This means there may be no need for a jigsaw, or the other more expensive cutting tools, which could end up saving you money.
So it's all sounding very positive at the moment, but I do have one final thing I want to throw out there that you might want to think about with regard to this topic. It's a bit like building a piece of IKEA furniture, rather than creating a great example of craftsmanship. To some people it's all the same and if it serves it's function, then what's the difference, but for others it's that sense of pride knowing that it's been all you own hard work and they have truly conquered the challenge.
