Angkor Thom A Must Visit Tourist Attraction In Siem Reap

Home to the eighth wonder of the world, Angkor Wat

, Siem Reap stands as the epicentre of Cambodia. With some amazing dining options, alluring spas, 5 star hotels and jaw dropping attractions, there is so much to do in this city. Still retaining its French colonial charm, visitors will find old shop houses and shady boulevards in some parts. While other areas are brimming with creature comforts that some of us consider a prerequisite for travel. Enjoying the influx of tourists that visit the area, Siem Reap is fast developing and enjoying the much deserved attention.

One must marvel at the architects of Angkor Thom, a Buddhist bayon temple built in the 12th century. Such artistry and attention to detail could only have been achieved by visionaries. The level of skill required to carve out such masterpieces is a tribute to the people of Cambodia. No longer will places of worship look as inspiring as the Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, but their legendary work lives on.

Situated several kilometres from the famous Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom is an ancient citadel set in rectangular surroundings. A main highlight of this attraction in Siem Reap is the bayon temple. In its hay days, the city was able to accommodate 100,000 people. Angkor Wat is inspired by Hinduism whilst Angkor Thom breaths Buddhist beliefs. Surrounded by a moat that is now dry, it was once inhabited by ferocious crocodiles. Each side of the wall has a gate set in the middle, and a bridge that extends to allow visitors in.

The city is full of temples and thousands of carvings. Each gate is ornate and the relief carvings are splendid, on the left of each gate one may see 54 gods on the left and to the other side 54 demon statue carvings. The south gate is the most popular as it leads visitors to the Angkor Wat. The west gate was captured in a scene from Tomb Raider (2001).

One can visit these temples in a day or spend several days exploring them, yet the memories will stay forever. Locating a Siem Reap hotel that allows you to admire the many attractions in the city is a must. Raffles Grand Hotel dAngkor is a beautiful 5 star hotel Siem Reap that boasts an array of amenities and legendary service.
