An Introduction To Purchasing A Plate Roll

Plate rolls are an extremely important part of a functioning plate roll machine

. When it comes time to replace these make sure that you choose the right fit.

The properties of the material and the machine are a major factor in determining if a particular type of style of plate roll will function properly.

By carefully assessing their equipment, a company can gain a competitive edge in the metal working industry. Assessments should include frequent check-ups, immediate maintenance, and ensuring safety precautions.

A metal's temper and yield strength must be matched with the overall machines to ensure a quality product. Different types of plate rolls require a specific type of plate roll machine.

A metal's temper is defined as the hardness or strength properties of the metal used in the plate rollers. If the temper is high, then the plate roll machine needs to have the ability to handle a high temper.

The yield strength of a material is defined as the stress at which a material begins to deform plastically. The yield strength is important to be aware of so that the product is not distorted or warped.

Be aware that metals have varying temper and yield strengths. This causes individual plate roll capabilities to vary drastically.

With the passing years, metals and steel have changed and continued to get stronger. Steel from the past is now known as mild steel.

Countless varieties of steel can be found in the metal industry. Varying types of steel are needed to produce different products. As such, all of these different types of steel require varying pressures to roll.

Defects can result from a lack of material planning. If this occurs, the manufacturer will end up with excessive scraps or a warped final product. Having these problems can be costly.

It is a shame to have excessive scraps and a warped final product, especially if the problem can be solved simply by just understanding the various types and properties of metals.

The next major thing to consider when purchasing a plate roller is the workload you need it to be able to handle. In other words, certain plate rolls have different work limits. In order to maintain and properly use your equipment you must stay within the operating restrictions of the machine or plate roll you are purchasing.

By concretely understanding how the machine and plate roller operate separately and together you will see greater results. Not only will you see greater results, but you will enlarge the lifespan of your plate roll at the same time.

There are some machines, although they are more expensive that are definitely higher quality. Quality rolling machines are usually cambered, or arched, at half of the full-rated value of the machine. When you don't have the best machinery available your may not be the quality you want it to be.

Problems with a low quality machine or a machine that will not work properly will result with a product that the customer will not want to purchase. If the product is not made right, there is no reason to make it in the first place.

Your machinery is important. If it is not working properly or is not the proper type for the job, then it is likely that you will actually lose money.

One problem that you should be aware of is rollers that attempt to put pressure on the upper limits of their plate roll. If 5/8 inch plate is rolled through a one inch-rated machine, a small degree of barrel effect will likely occur which will cause extra tension on both the machine and the material.

Also, be aware that when plate thickness approaches the upper end of a machine's rating then it may result in a problem. In this case, severe defects can occur. Unless the material is corrected with a shim, it will not be sellable.

Another problem that can occur is when very thin material is rolled through a very thick plate. The result of the finished product is that it will come out tighter in the center than at the ends. This is called the hourglass effect.

Shimming is needed to correct this hourglass effect. Keep in mind that it is always easier to have the right machine for the product in the first place rather than having to shim to repair after there is a mistake.
