Americans' Freedom to Choose

Americans' Freedom to Choose

Americans' Freedom to Choose

This is the time of year Americans celebrate "Independence Day", in recognition of the colonial Americans' declaration of their independence from the harsh rule of the British crown. That independence unleashed personal freedom in ways that had never before been possible in any society.

For the first time, individuals private citizens could succeed in a trade or profession, own property and improve their own circumstances without regard to social class, custom or other artificial restrictions. They were personally free in a way the under classes in Europe and the rest of the world had never been.

Today, "freedom" is many things to many people political freedom, personal freedom. All enjoy freedom of speech and the others specified in our Bill of Rights. For most of us, freedom on a daily basis is the career we choose, where we live, the choice of the vehicle we drive, and so on. Even today, in many parts of the world, marriages are arranged, vocations are assigned by the state, and "papers" are necessary to travel even within the country. Americans would quickly chafe at all of those restrictions on their personal choices.

But even in "the land of the free", we sometimes feel that our freedom is restricted by our income, lack of advancement possibilities at work, or not enough time for the things we want to do. We're not free to earn more. We understand the importance of our child's soccer game, but we're not free to attend. Many of our choices are limited by our circumstances.

What if you could change all of that? What if you could have financial freedom, or time freedom? How would your life be different? Think about that. Think about being your own boss, owning your own business, making your own decisions.

Where ever you are on the path the front end of a career, working through the middle years or nearing retirement you can change your circumstances. Perhaps it's starting a side business, opening a home-based business or acquiring more education/training in something new you're free to choose.

The men who signed that declaration in 1776 pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor in order to live and die free men. How do you define freedom? What will you do to achieve it?
