American Presidency

American Presidency

Ever since 1945, America has been led by presidents in this order: 1945-1953 (Harry S Truman), a democrat, 1953-1961, (Dwight D. Eisenhower), a republican, 1961-1963, (John F. Kennedy), a democrat, 1963 -1969, (Lyndon Johnson), a democrat. 1969 1974 (Richard Nixon), a republican, 1974-1977 (Gerald Ford,) a republican, 1977-1981, (Jimmy Carter) a democrat, 1981 to 1989, (Ronald Reagan), a republican, 1989 to 1993, (George W. Bush). Each and every president had his strengths and weaknesses. The American history is divided into three parts namely, the old, the middle and the new republic. The old republic was from 1789 to 1861 while the middle republic was from 1861 to 1933. The old republic therefore was from 1933 to 2005 (Benson, 1997). This article focuses itself on the presidents that ruled in the new republic but basically between 1945 to the time of George Bush as the American president. In this period, both democrats and republicans have led the American government. None of them has been a perfect leader though basing on their strengths and weaknesses I would conclusively consider Harry S. Truman as having been the most effective domestic policy president.

Background

He was born in Missouri on the 8th of May, 1884 to the family of John Anderson Truman. He went to schools in various parts of America this is because the family used to move from place to place in the USA. He left school in 1901 after completing his high school studies (Truman et al, 2002. p. 13). He served as a timekeeper, a clerk, and later on went back to farm work in his father's land. In addition, he also worked at Missouri National Guard. At the time of the First World War, he helped the Federal Service in France. He got married to Bess Wallace in 1919. After his marriage, he again worked in other positions like in 1922; he was a judge in the Jackson County Court. He was a good judge and his reputation spread widely. He was elected to the USA senate seat in 1934 and this paved way to his final success as the USA president. He later on run for presidential seat in 1945 after the death of the former president, Franklin D. Roosevelt and fortunately he won (Kelly, 2009). Harry S. Truman was the president of the United States of America who reigned from 1945 to 1953.American Presidency

Achievements

When he succeeded the former president, his office was also faced with many challenges though despite all these he had tremendous achievements. In his domestic policies he purposed to accomplish his dream of ending war and establishing peace. He managed to come up with a peace time economy. In addition, he was able to establish civil rights bill although the congress worked against these plans fortunately for him through his powers as a president, he managed to bring about changes in the civil rights sector. During his time in office, he issued orders to stop racial discrimination and to promote unity among people of all races. Racism was largely practiced in the employment field and so he worked against racism in the federal employment. To help in this establishment he came up with a committee on Civil rights.

In 1945 he brought to an end the war in Europe and in addition he gave orders that atomic bombs be dropped in Japan and this brought about the end of World War II. Truman underwent several challenges in domestic issues during his time in office. The post war effects need have restructured were some of the things that he faced when he went into office. The American economy was adversely affected which resulted in several shortages, citizens going on strike and also the Taft-Hartley Act was passed. Despite all these challenges, he was able to win the hearts of the majority and he went back to office in 1948 for his second time. (Beschloss, 1995).American Presidency

Japan bombing

His role in the dropping of the Japan bomb is seen as one of his successes. After his ordering of the bomb to be dropped, scholars estimate that if he had not done so it would have cost the Americans 200, 000 to 500,000 lives. The use of bomb influenced diplomacy a great deal. The atomic bomb brought to an end World War II and it also put across a message that the Soviet Union should then be aware that the US government was not afraid to use the bomb at all cost. The bombs were: one which was against Hiroshima and another one was against Nagasaki. His great mission was to end the war as much as possible so as to stop loss of troops in war. This led to Japan surrender in second of September 1945 (Harry S Truman Library and Museum, 2009).

Truman doctrine

He also came up with Truman Doctrine which said that it was the role of the US government to help all free people who were resisting subjugation from outside pressures through his doctrine, he planned to address the problem of war in Greece though it he purposed to oppose communism by all means. The same doctrine was used to help the US military economically especially in their aid to countries that were engaging in fights (Watson et al, 2005 p. 12). His doctrine bore fruits because he managed to end war in Greece and Turkey. Its government therefore worked in conjunction with Great Britain so as to gun down the Soviet Union. Through his leadership still, the American government managed to help in the rebuilding of Europe through Marshall Plan. The European government had problems ranging from economic crisis, low industrial patterns, poor agricultural production and also political problems. In the course of the war the government had spent around $9 billion to help Europe but after the war Truman discovered that much was required to help the country come up.(Watson, p.12). In fact the total estimates of what the country spent in order to bring back Europe to its original state is not less than $13 billion dollars (Kelly, 2009). When the European government had picked up, Truman's government was credited.
