Amenorrhea Treatment For Lasting Results

The absence of menses is referred to as amenorrhea and it happens in women of reproductive age

. It can be primary or secondary when diagnosed. Women who have never menstruated are classified as primary. Secondary is caused by other factors such as in women who have menstruated and then do not for 3 or more cycles. The type of treatment given for amenorrhea treatment is dependant upon the cause.

Primary amenorrhea can be caused by a variety of other conditions. These include chromosomal abnormalities like Turner's Syndrome. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia or hypothalamic or pituitary lesions could also be the cause. Structural abnormalities of the genital track such as an obstruction could cause symptoms. An absence of reproductive organs can be the reason for the absence of menses.

PCOD, not ovulating, thyroid disorders, oral contraceptives, autoimmune ovarian failure, too much physical exercise, some medications, premature menopause, Cushing's disease or an absence of ovulation can cause secondary amenorrhea. It can also be cause by pregnancy or adrenal disease. Having a chronic illness can effect menses as well.

Some of the signs and symptoms are the absence of menses itself. Other signs and symptoms can include weight loss which may indicate Anorexia Nervosa or Hyperthyroidism. Weight gain may suggest the presence of Cushing's Syndrome or hypothyroidism. Excessive hair on the face or Hirsutism may mean there is an androgen excess due to PCOD. Discharge from the nipples is another symptom to look for.

Pregnancy is ruled out in secondary amenorrhea. A hormonal imbalance exists that will need to be identified and a thorough medical history should be done. A physical examination that includes a hormone panel should be ordered to assess if the thyroid and prolactin levels are normal.

High levels of lutinizing hormone, or LH, and follicle stimulating hormone, or FSH, suggest primary failure of the ovaries. An elevated LH is common with PCOD. High levels of plasma testosterone many be caused by an androgen secreting tumor. Low levels if gonadotrophins and estradiol may indicate pituitary disease or hypothalamic disease. Based on blood tests one may also need to have imaging done such as a CT scan, MRI or ultrasound.

Conventional treatment options depend on the age, causative factor, desire for children and psychological condition of the patient. There is substitution therapy and stimulation therapy. Substitution therapy includes treatment with cyclic estrogen or an estrogen-progesterone blend in case of ovarian failure. This is good for younger patients but is also good for patients over 40 who have psychological factors to take into consideration. Stimulation therapy is used in the case of pituitary failure where the ovaries are stimulated with human gonadotrophins or non steroidal products such as Clomiphene Citrate. Removal or treatment of the thyroid or adrenal glands may help to reestablish ovarian function.

Taking external hormones may make the symptoms disappear temporarily, but for permanent amenorrhea treatment it is important to figure out why the hormones are imbalanced. Natural remedies treat primary and secondary symptoms by getting to the root cause and giving relief that is sustained. They work because they stimulate the pituitary gland and the ovaries regulating menstruation and the ovaries. They induce normal menses and the length of the cycles. The female endocrine axis is balanced giving lasting results.
