Zanzibar is the exotic spiced island outside of Tanzania on the east coast of Africa. It's full of voltage and experiences.
Zanzibar is surrounded by the Indian Ocean with its turquoise sea water, long and white sandy beaches and coral reefs.
Snorkeling and diving is one of the cherished activities for tourists who take a few days in Zanzibar. But there is also some other exciting and interesting things you can do during the holidays. Here are some suggestions.
Historic Stone Town.
An interesting tour to the historic part of the capital of Zanzibar is one of the things you have to do. Multicultural Stone Town has a long and dramatic history. The tour starts at the famous fruit and spice market. Furthermore, several visible marks from the slave period, Dr. Livingston and Stanley, the old fort, the National Museum, the ruins of Marahubipallasset built by Sultan Barghash in 1880 and through the narrow streets with colorful houses built 150 years ago. This district is full of bazaars, boutiques, restaurants.
Safari Blue.
Boat trips that starts in the fishing village of Fumba in the beautiful area around the Menai Bay, south-west of Zanzibar with beautiful sandy beaches, islands, lagoons and beautiful scenery. The boat used is the traditional mahogany dhows that Zanzibar is renowned for. The whole trip is designed as a leisurely day of swimming, snorkeling around the coral reefs, enjoy and pleasure in beautiful surroundings that only the turquoise Indian Ocean boasts can show you. During the trip you are served coconuts, snacks and lunch.
Exotic spices and plantations.
A four-hour guided tour of exotic spices and fruits on the plantations. The tour starts at Kibweni Palace and proceed to Kidichi. There are also Persian baths built by Seyyid Said Sultan dedicated to his wife Princess Shehrzard, a family member of the SJA of Persia. The tour provides a wonderful insight into a diversity of tastes and odors from spices, fruits, herbs and beautiful plants and flowers.
Boat trip to Prison Island.
It's a relaxing trip to the beautiful island just off Zanzibar City. Originally the island was developed as a prison, but was never adopted. The buildings were later used as a waiting room for slaves. The remains of the buildings could be seen. From the island there are superb views to the capital, especially when it is dark. The island also has beautiful beaches and crystal clear water. Coral reefs around the island are wonderful setting for snorkeling. The island is also known for it's giant turtle's.
Swim with dolphins.
Dolphins like to play around the boats. And there are good opportunities to jump in the crystal clear waters and swim quite close to the dolphins. We recommend that the trips are added to the afternoon, to avoid the main tourist traffic that starts in the morning. Not only because of all the tourists but also because the many boats that will disturb the animals. In Kizimkazi is also a mosque from the 1200s, the earliest concrete evidence of Islam in East Africa.
Life in Jozani Forest.
A guided tour into Jozani forest that is untouched virgin forest with a great diversity of animals, vegetation, swamps, mangroves and tall trees.
