Before soap was made, our ancestors around the world used only water to keep themselves clean. Water was not very useful as a cleanser. At the most, it could just get mud off the skin. Thus cleansers like detergents and soaps were created. Water alone is incapable of removing many types of stains. Oils, grease and other tough stains need detergents and soaps as water does not mix with oil. So basically, soap acting as an emulsifier allows water to extract grime.
