Hard pressure applied to both teeth and jaws through gnashing and clenching

. They are the signs that show how the present is becoming more and more stresful for people. Men and women may release tension through potentially harmful mouth movements because of the stressful situations they constantly find themselves in. It is getting common for adults to exhibit a condition known as bruxism, where adults grind their teeth and clench their jaws while asleep. The clicking of jaw joints is becoming a problem in the neuromuscular side, and it produces ear pain, headaches, and vertigo as side effects.

More women, particularly those above 40, are prone to develop bruxism than men, studies have revealed. Stomach problems are usually a reflection of men's frustrations, while women's are usually reflected through problems in the mouth. Teeth damage can momentarily be avoided through the use of a plastic retainer or jaw strap, but the surest way to curing the problem is to deal with the frustrations that are the root problems of the tension.

Orthodontists are realizing that there exists other dental problems, and bruxism is only one of them. For the past years, orthodontics has concerned itself with much more than just straightening of teeth to look good. New techniques and theories focus on the total facial structure including bone, muscle, jaw, lips and tongue, in addition to teeth.

Although orthodontics is often thought of as an area of dentistry that deals primarily with adolescent problems, it also relates well with many adults. A dentist said more care has to be exerted when treating adults. Unlike the tissues of children, adult tissues don't bounce back as readily. He points out that advances have been made in combining orthodontics and plastic surgery to reconstruct severe deformities resulting from such things as protruding jaws, cleft lips and palate. He says that about two thirds of the orthodontic cases treated annually are problems involving jaw growth. Teeth are subordinate to the jaw. Many times if you put the jaw where it should go, the teeth will follow. Proper jaw growth may be aided through restructuring through surgery or through the use of corrective appliances.

While non compulsory, orthodontics does prevent certain dental diseases from happening. A child may develop problems in speech and swallowing if he develops improper tongue thrust, which may develop especially if he sucks his thumb. The tongue is strong enough to actually change the location of teeth.

The frequently used chinstraps which provide both upward and downward forces on the lower jaw are used to correct abnormal bite. Bad bite would usually result in tooth loss or damage of the bone. The direct bonding of plastic with metal for braces and the improvement of materials have improved the cosmetic aspect of dental devices. In terms of effectiveness, metal works best, but in terms of aesthetics, plastic is often preferred more.

What orthodontists are widely utilizing now for their services is the laminagraph, a new radiography apparatus. This device is capable not only of taking an Xray of the entired dentofacial region in a single shot, but also does this without using much radiation. As a diagnostic tool, laminagraphy is very effective, but it will not take the place of individual X rays.
