Addressing The Need Of The Handicap For Dental Care

Addressing The Need Of The Handicap For Dental Care

Going to the dentist is not something one would feel excited about.

Some would look at it as an experience of discomfort. Treating handicapped people is a big challenge for dentists.

How do you explain to a severely mentally retarded person that the pain of a toothache can only be dealt with by a dentist using strange looking instruments and a myriad of complicated machinery?

How can a person in a wheelchair get to a dentist's office in a building that does not have ramps?

Because of these and other considerations, a masonic organization began funding a program to provide quality dental care for handicapped persons at a local clinic.

The dental facility, one of the few of its kind in the nation, is open to handicapped persons of all types and all ages from the entire United States and Canada.

None of the handicapped will have to spend their own money. Through public assistance or insurance coverage, a patient may have his dental costs covered.

When funds cannot be found to cover the cost, the foundation of the organization shoulders the expense.

They would make sure that they answer to all expenses, including hospitalization, transportation, lodging, and treatments. If you exclude air fare, you would find that the cost would be about $350 to $550 per person.

The patient is given general anesthesia before dental work is done to him or her. Dental and medical evaluation is done before treatment, which is why the patient is admitted earlier to the hospital.

Even before the patient arrives, the center already has specific information about the patient.

Family members stay in adjoining rooms just in case the patients need them. Three and a half days is the average length of time spent by a patient in a hospital.

While most cases are handled in the hospital, some may still require out patient care. A provision for additional care is given.

For handicaps who cannot be treated using the traditional method, there is also treatment with the use of general anesthesia.

To provide faster and more efficient treatment, the most recent in dental equipment have been purchased. Similar to chaise lounges, the dental chairs are designed for the benefit of both dentist and patient.

Patience is the most important qualification for a dentist working with handicapped patients. There is a communication barrier and you must be able to reach them on their level.

Understanding the patient, his environment, and society's perception of handicapped people is something necessary. The program provides an avenue for dental students to receive training.

This will help in equipping future dentists in preparation for treating handicapped patients.

The organization will keep track of the dentists who get special training so that patients may go to them when necessary. The center receives request for dental care and then refers the patient for sponsorship.

So far, we've been in good relations with the patients' families. The fact that a facility is now available makes them happy.
