Share: Enablers, Media and co-dependent individuals should take note of how they are contributing to the demise of Charlie Sheen...sadly many are trying to gain from his illness as in Michael Jackson's story. Congratulations to NBC for FINALLY taking a stand they should have done several years ago. I hope that he can get help before it is too late... as well as many "regular" individuals we all know in our lives that are struggling. Addiction is a disease that affects more than celebrities, this can be your husband, son, brother, etc., it destoys lives...if you are enjoying watching Charlie's train wreck...ask yourself why?
I don't know of too many families that have not been affected by addiction. I ask my clients that come seeking help for their loved one..."why do you think you can help?" It is not an easy question, we so often play the rescuer role and keep the addict from taking responsibility. Being the rescuer makes one feel momentarilyin control over a very helpless, hopelessfeeling. It is very difficult to watch a love one lose him/herself and we try to help by begging, nagging, bargaining, negociating, etc., much to the addicts angered denial. It is difficult to see a loved one choose this distructive path and one turn our backs, but resentment and hate is all you will receive from a person who is not ready to admit he needs help. Addiction is not only about the addict but the family and friends affected. It is difficult for me to tell a spouse that sees me in therapy to tell me all that she has/is doing to try to help her addicted husband...that maybe she needs to look at herself. Family members do not have to fall down that mountain along with their addicted loved one, if you can gain self preservation and realize unless that person wants help, YOU must help yourself and think of how it has affected you. If you stay...are you addicted to being a victim? Often supporting and helping your addicted loved one is walking away, NOT EASY, but destroying yourself emotionally, physically and spirtually is notthe solution.
I do believe an addict can go into recoveryand reprogram the brain from old negative tapes. It is not a matter of a few days in treatment, it takes lots of introspective, difficult work toreally look at your story, your pain, what you were running from? This is when familyand friends can be supportive. Most beganusing the "bandaid" to temporarily ease the thoughts and than liked the "altered state". I find most addicts are injured children, many with difficult childhoods, who have big hearts but don't seetheir wonderfulqualities because nobody pointed them out. It's such a vicious circle of distorted thoughts and beliefs. Science is learning more about the brain and re-programming through cognitive behavioral therapy, and other modalities butit takes more than weeks, months and years. It is never to late to start and embrace a richer life. I hold hope formany ofthe "Charlies" of the world, and if not to help the families affected...that is why I became a psychotherapist.
