Add A Little Culture Into The Mix By Visiting Some Mayan Ruins During Your Cancun Holidays

If youre off to Cancun youll already be well versed in the citys party reputation

and probably have started planning exactly which bars and clubs you want to check out. On a holiday like this though, its easy to get yourself a bit run down, or decide you want to do something a little different from the daily beach-to-night-out routine. Something great to do mid-week, or on a day where you just want a little escape, is to go and soak up some of the amazing Mayan culture in the surrounding areas. The Mayan ruins are a perfect example of this, and itd be a shame to miss out on such an accessible and enriching experience during Cancun holidays.

Mayan Ruins

Mayan ruins are located all over Mexico, and run into Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. Luckily for all Cancun tourists some of the most stunning, and most well known ruins can be found in nearby Riviera Maya, just a few miles away. Chichen Itza is probably the most recognisable Mayan ruin that youll get to see. Its symmetrical pyramid shape holds an imposing silhouette and gives you a sense of the profound spiritual and cultural significance these buildings held for the ancient Mayans.

Other ruins include Tulum, Coba and Ek Balam, all located in Riviera Maya. Although these sites are considered less dramatic than Chichen Itza, they all offer their own individual merits which makes them worth a visit. Coba for example is the biggest ruin site but a lot of it hasnt been properly uncovered or restored and is still entwined in the jungle. Youll get a proper tomb raider feel there. Ek Balam is the least crowded ruin and arguably the best preserved, and here you can climb the pyramid.

All the ruins have tours providing easy access and guiding you around sites while giving you additional background information and historical details, so why not take a break from all the partying and get a culture fix on your Cancun holidays?
