Acne In Newborn Children

Acne In Newborn Children

Acne usually affects people during their teenage years

. The reason for this is that hormones go on overdrive during this period, which consequently causes the oil glands underneath the skin to overproduce sebum. The excess sebum can, then, clog the pores which can, then, lead to the development of acne.

The overproduction of sebum at this stage in a persons life makes the incidence of acne in other stages rarer, especially in children. Children have inactive sebaceous glands. However, this doesnt mean that they are immune to acne even at this young age. There are instances wherein children do exhibit acne problems. In fact, statistics show that about 20% of newborn children do develop acne.

So What Causes Acne in Children?

There are several ways by which children can develop acne on their skin. One of the more common causes is the irritation on the childs skin, particularly with a newborn one. The irritation can be caused by either the secretions from the birth canal during delivery or when there are excessive amounts of androgens released by the mothers body into the newborns bloodstream.

Another possible cause is the early production of hormones that cause acne in children. It is, of course, not normal for babies to develop these hormones at this age, so they should be checked by a doctor right away.

There are also drugs which could induce the development of acne when they come into contact with a childs skin. Make sure that you read labels of drugs before you apply them on the skin of your newborn child.

Genetics also plays a vital role in the development of acne in children. If the older siblings of the child also showed signs of acne when they were babies, then the newborn will also likely develop such a condition.

What to Do About Acne in Children

The first step that parents should take is to determine the cause of acne on their newborn. The ones we mentioned above are just a few of them. Some instances of acne in children will disappear naturally. In fact, most cases of acne in newborn children will only require you to wash your babys skin regularly with clean water and mild soap. So, theres no need to panic if you see your child developing acne on his skin.

However, if the condition continues to persist several weeks after the child is born, then make it a point to consult your doctor right away. They may advise you to take stronger measures in order to prevent the development of acne. Only in very rare cases will your doctor advise your child to take strong drugs.

An early development of hormones that cause acne should also be checked by a doctor, not only to lessen the rid of acne on the babys skin, but also to prevent other probable implications of early hormone development. This condition could lead to disabilities in the child and, thus, should be treated by a doctor right away.
