According to what the Hindu mythology says about Gangotri is that Goddess Ganga, who was the daughter of heaven had taken the form of a river, in order to absolve the sins incurred by the predecessors of King Bhagirath, who did severe penance for several centuries. Ganga was supposed to clean the ashes of the ancestors and thereby provide them salvation after doing so. The Ashwamegha horse was supposed to be taken on an uninterrupted journey all around the earth, the horse was to be accompanied by 60,000 sons born to the King and Queen Sumati and one son Asmanjas born from the second queen Kesani. The ruler of the Gods Indra feared that his position was at stake and therefore stole away the horse and tied it near Sage Kapils ashram. While searching for the horse the sons reached the ashram and upon finding the horse there stormed into the Ashram, but were reduced to ashes by the wrath of Sage Kapil.
The temple of Gangotri is situated at an elevated height of 3048 m amidst beautiful surroundings. Gangotri is located over 99 km from the district of Uttarkashi. The Gangotri temple was constructed in the 18th century by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa and is situated on the left bank of the Bhagirathi River. The physical source of the holy river Bhagirathi is at Gaumukh that is 18 kms on the hill along the Gangotri Glacier.
