A guide to home hair removal techniques by:Charlotte Bleasdale

We all want smooth skin and that's why women spend so much time trying out all the different methods of hair removal

. Although you can have it done professionally at a beauty salon, it's a good idea to save that pampering for a special occasion because it's so easy and quick to do hair removal at home and some techniques are best saved for the professional.

There are many hair removal methods that you can do at home and here's a guide on those techniques.

Shaving

The most common method of hair removal at home, shaving is a convenient, easy and fast way to remove hair on the legs, armpits and bikini area. There are two methods of shaving - wet and electrical. Wet shaving is the most effective, it is important to use a good quality razor and foam. Wet shaving tends to last around a week or so without noticeable re-growth depending on the thickness of your hair. Using an electric shaver takes off less hair but is perfect if you need immediate results, although the hair will grow back much quicker than a wet shave.

Waxing

Waxing is another really popular form of removing hair and is one of the most effective because it offers more long-term results than shaving. Waxing is especially suited to the legs and bikini area, as it extracts the hair from the root and is also common for using on the eyebrows. Women with darker and thicker hair tend to favour this technique because it reduces the speed of growth. Although it can be slightly painful at first, waxing becomes less painful the more you have it done because the hair follicles become weaker each time it grows back. Some women report that after a lengthy time using waxing that some hairs do not grow back.

Depilatory

Using depilatory creams is an effective hair removal technique. They use a chemical that melts the hair away at the root, apply the cream to the area you want to treat, leave for the time stated and wash off. This can be more effective than shaving, as it gives a smoother finish, but is more time consuming and some are not always effective in removing hair. It is vital that you carry out a skin test 48 hours beforehand in case you suffer any allergic reactions.

Epilating

A useful way of removing unwanted hair, epilators take the hair straight from the root using a gripping and pulling action that removes several hairs at a time. Women typically use epilators to remove hair on the legs and armpits. Like waxing, epilating can be painful at first but the more you do it the less painful it will get.

Plucking

Plucking is typically associated with the eyebrows and is one of the most effective ways of keep your eyebrows neat and tidy. Some women also use plucking on their bikini line. By plucking the hair out at the follicle it means growth is slowed because it takes longer to grow back to the surface of the skin. Repeatedly pulling the hair out of the follicle may affect it enough over time to stop it from producing more hair.

These are just a few methods of hair removal but are the only ones that you can successfully and safely carry out at home. There are many other kinds that professionals can do; threading is great for the eyebrows instead of tweezers, laser hair removal is not permanent but it uses light to damage the follicles and reduce growth, and electrolysis is permanent and inserts a small needle into the follicle to burn the root and prevent it from producing hair. You should never attempt these methods at home and always have the treatment done by a professional.
