A Tour Of Italy's Prosecco Region
While Champagne's name may refer to the region in which it is produced
, Italy's savoured bubbly wine Prosecco's name refers to the grape used to make it. The Prosecco region sweeps through the area north of Venice, as the grape grows on those great rolling hills that stretch through the towns of Valdobbiadene past Treviso and Conegliano, as far as Vittorio Veneto. Staying in one of the beautiful villas Villas in Italy gives you a wonderful opportunity to see this area, touring the wine and cuisine of of the local Osterie and Trattorie.Traditional Osterie:
-Bar Alpino -
The capital of Prosecco country is Valdobbiane, and the best place to start your sparkling wine odyssey may be the historic Bar Alpino. With its friendly young owners and the recently renovated dcor, it is hard to believe that this place is nearly eighty years old. Now it is a very smart wine bar with a great selection of over fifty Proseccos to be sampled. The clientle remains the same though, with local wine makers whisking through at all times for a quick glass, or a bite of the fantastic traditional food on offer.
-Osteria Senz'Onte
The Osteria Senz'Onte is the 'Osteria without a host', and it remains true to its name, you arrive to an unmanned bar, from which you serve yourself, wine along with cheeses and hams. You then place payment in to a wooden box and somehow it has worked and continues to do so.
Owned by salami makers from a nearby town, this Osteria is quite a tricky one to find, but worth the journey. A winding road leads to a line in the middle of the vines where the car can be parked, then a five minute walk will bring you to this ancient building where you can experience some of the finest views of the area.
Cantina Visits:
-Vigne Matte
The small hamlet of Rolle is one of the most beautiful spots in the Prosecco region and this Cantina Vigne Matte sits right at the top of its highest hill. It is a well organised establishment so there's no need to book in advance. Be prepared for a long tasting session as along with its Proseccos, Vigne Matte also produces some great white and red wines.
-Gregoletto
The Gregoletto family has been here since 1600, where they have been making fine wines ever since. The sparkling Prosecco here is a real bargain at 5 euros but be sure to sample their other wares, the oak-barelled rosso that mixes merlot and cabernet grapes is a real treat.

Cassa Rossa is one of the finest Trattories within this region, that is if you can find it. Tucked away on a particularly steep hill, it is an elusive place, yet when you do find it it is worth the effort. On a clear day you can see all the way to the campanile of San Marco in Venice, and appreciate all the beauty of this region. Yet it is the food here that will steal the show, the wonderful home cooked meat dishes, accompanied of course by, a fine glass of Prosecco.
