A Profile Of A Labourers Job

Construction is the biggest industry in Britain

, employing nearly 2 million people across the county. The construction industry is responsible for all types of work from building offices, houses and schools, to roads, tunnels and bridges.

There are jobs available in every stage of building including designing and planning, building, altering, restoring and maintaining them. There is huge demand for construction workers in Britain and the industry recruits nearly 90,000 new workers every year and one role is that of a labourer.

A labourer's job duties will vary dependent on the type of construction field they are in. Typically, those in labourer jobs build scaffolding and complete maintenance checks on machinery. Their role involves them working with hand tools and moving materials around construction sites, to the areas in which they are needed.

Labourers may find themselves assisting others to complete the job and helping with the cleaning up of the building site. Often if the job involves road workers, those working as labourers are responsible for setting up traffic diversion equipment.

Many labourers receive on the job training, which may be combined with a college course. If applying to labourer jobs, applicants must be willing to work in all weather conditions and even near hazardous materials. As with any job, those with experience of working within the construction industry are more valuable to an employer, which is why on the job training whilst learning in college is a good idea.

As with most manual jobs, working as a labourer does offer good pay. By working hard you can move up the career ladder, even setting up your own business, if that is your career goal. Most labourer jobs are full time, although it is estimated that only 8 or 9 per cent of jobs are part time. Generally it is a male dominated industry and the average age of a worker is 39 or 40 years old.
