Owning a recruiting firm, I am often asked where the jobs are in the United States
, what industry verticals are hiring and the different compensation levels currently being offered. Below, you will find some estimates regarding the above inquires. Hopefully, this chart will prove useful not only for those looking for a job, put those gauging whether they are overcompensated, undercompensated or are just on par. Please keep in mind that all numbers and stats I am giving are for senior level professionals and above as we don't staff jobs which are under the $70,000 range base salary.Highest Paid Industries:
1. Sales in Social Media - out of all sales positions, social media sales compensation takes the cake. If you are an experienced sales representative and know social media, you are looking at a base salary of $170,000 - $150,000 with uncapped commission and full benefits.
2. Biotechnology Sales - you should not be surprised by this field as not everybody is cut out for biotechnology sales. Most biotech companies want sales people who can moonlight as scientists because selling biotechnology products without the proper knowledge is nearly impossible. Since these individuals are quite hard to find, they are paid very well. A base salary goes for $160,000 to $130,000.
3. Beauty Industry - the beauty industry could be #1, but the compensation varies too much to have it beat the social media vertical. On average, the compensation for a senior sales representative is $150,000 to $135,000 with uncapped commission, benefits and a lot of wiggle room to make a lot of money via commission. The beauty industry is never going away. That is, unless the styles in this country drastically change.
4. Technology Industry - by technology, we are referring to all types of hardware, software and BPO jobs. For those who are not in the industry, BPO is an acronym which stands for "business process outsourcing." BPO is the process where a company's technology division is outsourced to another country - mainly India. Most senior software jobs are going for $120,000 - $100,000 as a base salary. This does not include commission and benefits.
Locations Where Hiring is Taking Place and What the Cities Offer Solid Compensation for Sales Pros:
1. New York City - no surprise here. Not only is New York City full of the most job opportunities, the sales representatives in NYC are paid the most.
2. Chicago - these days, when it comes to hiring, Chicago is a very close second. Lately, there has been almost no difference between the compensation offered in Chicago and New York City.
3. Houston - it seems that oil is not going away. Hiring in Houston is alive and well, however the compensation for sales professionals is about at a 30% discount to that of New York and Chicago.
Locations Where Hiring is Quite Dead
1. Miami - at first, I didn't want to include Miami because it was so dead in the water, but I guess I'll include it because it is so dead in the water.
2. Phoenix - Phoenix seems to still be attempting to get back on its feet after the housing / mortgage crisis. It doesn't seem to be doing so well.
3. Las Vegas - nobody is signing the Elvis hit "Viva Las Vegas." Instead it's more like "Leva Las Vegas."
