Considering Australia immigration was once given out as a punishment to many of the

UK's criminals (alarmingly, as recently as the nineteenth century), it's often surprising to realise just how popular of a country Australia has become.

To showcase this popularity perfectly, the following 7 exports are some of the most famous people, items and programs that have been exported out of Australia.

1. Kylie Minogue - a famous face after appearing in the soap Neighbours from 1986 until 1988 as Charlene Robinson, Kylie Minogue shot to fame in 1987 when she released Locomotion, a song that not only remained at the top of the Australian chart for nearly two months, but which turned out to be the biggest selling record of the 1980s.

2. Fosters lager - although marketing for Fosters lager focuses on the brand's popularity throughout the country Down Under, Fosters is in fact more popular in the UK than it is in Australia, shown by the low popularity level of the lager in Australia on the Advice About Beer website.

The love of Fosters in England is actually extremely high and the company have claimed on their website that 30 pints of Fosters are consumed every second.

3. Neighbours - currently in its 26th season, Neighbours first started in 1985 and as of 20 August 2010, there have been 5,995 episodes.

Focusing on a fictional part of Australia known as Ramsey Street (although the actual street and houses are real, with people living in them), the soap has created some world famous characters, from Kylie Minogue's Charlene Robinson and Jason Donovan's Scott Robinson to Toadie and Dr Karl Kennedy, both of whom have had substantial success on the UK's university circuit.

4. AC/DC - arguably one of the most popular heavy metal bands ever, AC/DC were put together by Malcolm and Angus Young in 1973 and have went on to achieve substantial global success.

Releasing records such as Highway To Hell and Back In Black, their most famous album to date, Back In Black, is the second highest selling album ever, with only Michael Jackson's Thriller album beating it to the top spot.

5. Ugg boots - whilst Ugg boots have seen a massive amount of popularity in recent years, they have in fact been around for close to a century, used initially in World War 1 by aviators.

Made of sheepskin and having a fleeced lining, they are warm and comfortable and have become iconic with fashion in recent times, with Pamela Anderson reputedly starting the trend.

6. Boomerang - said to be tens of thousands of years old, boomerangs were originally used for hunting and as a weapon by the Aboriginal tribes of Australia, but today are used more for fun.

7. Howard Florey - unless you have an interest in medicine, it's unlikely that you've heard of Howard Florey. However, simply put, without him and his colleagues, we would not be as far forward with our medical advances as we are today.

Sir Alexander Fleming is widely regarded as the person who developed penicillin, but the real truth is that Fleming simply discovered it. Not having enough time to spend on its development, he passed the project to Howard Florey, who along with his team, went on to develop penicillin in such a way that his work is reputed to have saved 80 million lives.
