6 Things You Need to Know About Safe Wireless Browsing for Your Kids

These days, kids are practically glued to their gadgets. With a simple wireless connection, your children are able to spend hours surfing on the Internet without an idea of what they are doing or whom they are talking to.

As a parent, it is important that you are aware of their safetyeven on the Internet. It is essential that they be taught how to use their gadgets responsibly.

1. Know the risks involved in using the Internet.

There are several dangers in allowing kids to use the Internet. Cyberbullying is when children harass and intimidate their peers through IM, emails, text messages or even phone calls. This form of bullying tends to go by undetected by teachers or parents.

2. Go to the sites they do.

If your kids are hooked on certain games online, play them, as well. You may not find them very entertaining, but it is important that you are familiar with how these sites run. Does the site require a lot of personal information upon registering for an account?

3. Make rules and stick to them.

As a family, come up with rules about Internet safety and usage. Remind them never to give out personal information such as your address, phone number or school. Limit the amount of time each child can go online a day. Have them ask for permission each time they download a file or send one to someone else.

4. Limit their access to certain sites.

If your children are still very young and have access to a wireless connection, limit what they can access. There are several programs that allow parents to control which websites their children can visit. Set restrictions per child based on their age.

5. Teach them about password security.

As early as possible, teach your children about password security. If they sign up for a particular website on the Internet, walk them through the process and explain about security. Tell them never to share their passwords with anyone except their parents.

6. Be approachable.

Have a serious conversation with your kids about the risks involved in being online. Tell them they can talk to you if they are uneasy about a particular person they are chatting with online or a particular website.

Your children's Internet safety is something you should always be aware of. Follow the six steps above and you can be more confident about your children, whether or not they are using a wireless connection.
