5 Reasons Why Your Children Are Misbehaving

There are a multitude of reasons as to why your children might be misbehaving. Five possible reasons are listed below:

Primarily misbehaviour stems from the child receiving a lack of attention. To a child, any kind of attention is better than none, even if it is negative attention. Some children feel that their parents do not like them or do not talk or spend time with them. This leads to the child acting up to gain attention from the parents. Children who feel this way may even actively get in trouble to receive attention. Show positive attention to your child when he/she is behaving well even if it is a minor point such as saying "thank you" or "please". Don't inadvertently push your child to misbehave in order for them to be noticed.

Children misbehave when they do not know what to do in a new setting or circumstance. It is natural for any child to make mistakes when learning something new; for instance when learning to pronounce new words or learning to walk. Try to be patient as your child learns acceptable behaviour. Various actions that some parents may see as wrong may in fact be mistakes. Again appropriate behaviour should be greeted with positive attention. It is often a good idea to anticipate new situations your child may encounter and talk about what they will be like, for example the first day of school. Discuss what choices they may have to make and what behaviour is appropriate in the new surroundings. Parents will not always be available to guide a child through all tough situations, children learn the best when they are in the situation themselves.5 Reasons Why Your Children Are Misbehaving

Children misbehave when they imitate their parents. Your children experiment with behaviour they see in you, what they see on television or what they see at school. You cannot control what your child sees others doing but you can act as good role models and admit any mistakes so your child knows when what you are doing is wrong and is inappropriate behaviour. If a parent swears, a child may imitate this and start using bad language elsewhere. If a parent hits a child, they child may hit a brother or sister. It is important that these bad behaviours are separated from good ones. This is especially important when certain behaviours on television are portrayed as heroic, cute or funny.

Children test their parents discipline. Children want to know what their parents truly mean when they set boundaries. Misbehaviour may arise when a child checks to see which behaviours a parent likes or dislikes. Parents must be firm about which behaviours are suitable and which are not. This is important to meet the goals you have for your child.

Children can misbehave to get what they want. If misbehaviour in the past has allowed the child to gain attention or a new toy it may continue and be repeated. For this reason, when you stop awarding rewards for tantrum behaviour, more tantrums will follow. This child is simply using the strategy that has worked in the past to get the results they want. Make sure that you are not unintentionally rewarding bad behaviour and it is not unlikely that bad behaviour will increase at first when the child receives no rewards. It is best for parents to teach their children an alternative way other, than bad behaviour, to get what they want.
