Dar el Makhzen
The Dar el Makhzen, which served as the Sultan's palace in the 17th century, is found on the Kasbah section of Tangier. It contains a wonderful collection of Moroccan art from various eras. The collection is housed within the prince's apartments, which feature a fresco ceiling, sculptured plasterwork and intricate mosaics. Some of the crafts displayed are carpets from Rabat, silks from Fez, and some Moroccan firearms.
Tangier American Legation Museum
American culture flourished in the old Medina in Tangier. The Tangier American Legation museum is said to be the sole historical landmark of the United States located overseas. It is found within the American Embassy. The site dates back to 1777 when Morocco was one of the first sub national entities to recognize the United States as an independent nation. The museum contains a huge collection of artwork and classical rooms.
Forbes Museum of Tangier
Located on Malcolm, the Forbes' Palais Mendoub houses a huge collection of miniature soldiers-about 100,000! These lead soldiers portray famous historical battles like the Waterloo and Dien Bien Phu. After Forbes' death in the year 1990, the museum is now managed and owned by the Moroccan government. The museum is still open for public viewing.
Kasbah
The Kasbah is a 17th century-inspired residential quarters in Tangier. It is a labyrinth of arcades, streets, terraces, and homes which also gives a wonderful view of the medina and the bay. The fascinating Kasbah mosque highlights an octagonal minaret and is positioned in the mechovar. Tourists can visit the Sultan's gardens in the Rue Raid Sultan. The Spanish city of Tarifa can be viewed on a clear day.
Asilah
Located on the southern part of Tangier is the fishing village of Asilah. It is a popular resort because of its proximity to the Paradise Beach and its relaxing atmosphere. It also features a breathtaking 15th century Andalusian medina. You can tour the whole village by foot and dine at its seafood restaurants. This area is accessible from central Tangier by train.
