3D Trees Modeling Program TreeMagik Review.

Well-made 3D tree models add realism through a depth of detail to any 3D scene, be it for a game, an architectural or landscaping visualization or a digital movie, and are ubiquitous outdoor digital environment props. However, creating a forest of realistic fully-textured unique 3D tree types in a standard 3D modeling program such as Autodesk Maya or Blender3D can be time consuming and tedious, especially for a lone independent game developer or film maker.

Another consideration for the 3D modeler is the polygon count of their Free 3D Model tree models. This is especially important in applications that will be rendering in real time such as 3D games or web applications, where too high a polygon count can significantly reduce framerate delivery. Unfortunately, realistic 3D tree model creation can generate a significant polygon count if the 3D modeler tries to produce every leaf, twig and branch on their model trees, or fills a scene with a dense 3D woodland.

Fortunately, generating low polygon 3D trees is made quick and easy using the 3D tree modeling software TreeMagik.

3D Tree Modeling in TreeMagik

Modeling 3D trees in TreeMagik is a delight after handcrafting a tree model in other 3D modeling programs. In TreeMagik, individual tree objects are generated from base models that can be modified by the 3D modeler using a number of sliders to affect a given tree part. Each tree model comprises of the following parts:

The trunk, which can be a single trunk, split trunk or an imported mesh.

The branches.

The leaves.

The root, which is optional.

Each generation of a tree part is subject to randomization, ensuring that every 3D tree model created in TreeMagik is unique. This randomization is based on the properties of the tree part adjusted by the 3D modeler.

For example, under the "branch" tab, the modeler may choose the number of branches the tree will have, and how many joints each branch may have, and may deform the branches along their x-, y- and z-axis. On pressing the "generate branches" button, the branches will instantly appear, fulfilling the property adjustments of the 3D modeler.

If the results are not to the modeler's liking, pressing the "remove branches" button will delete the branches. Pressing the "generate branches" button again will produce a different configuration of branches that continue to follow the property adjustments.

Making 3D Model Trees

Even without altering any of the properties of the different tree parts, a 3D modeler can create a whole forest of unique model trees by simply clicking the "generate" button on the trunk, branch, leaves and root tabs, exporting the results, then repeating the procedure. The random element applied to the design of each tree model results in a different tree being created every time.

Of course, no tree is properly complete without leaves, and no 3D tree model is ready for use without having textures applied. TreeMagik handles both operations with an ease that will delight 3D modelers.

3D Leaves in TreeMagik.

TreeMagik leaves are applied to a 3D tree model (if desired, as the inclusion of leaves is entirely optional) through one of the tree part tabs in the TreeMagik application. A leaf type is selected from a huge choice of leaf shapes, and, as with the other tree parts, the properties of the leaves as they will appear on the tree model can be adjusted by the 3D modeler. Clicking the "generate leaves" button instantly creates a pattern of 3D leaf growth.

TreeMagik also includes a leaf painter section, where a leaf brush can be picked and patterns of leaves can be hand-painted, for use as a leaf material that can then be applied as a texture.

Texturing 3D Tree Models in TreeMagik.

Perhaps the most gratifying feature of TreeMagik is the ease with which the generated 3D model trees can be textured. Any 3D modeler who is familiar with the UV unwrapping process of texturing common to standard 3D modeling software will fully appreciate the single click functionality of texturing in TreeMagik.

Each part of a tree model can be textured by selecting the "textures" tab, selecting the element of the tree to be textured, and clicking on the desired texture from a wide range of appropriate materials, or importing a new material. And that's it. The trunk, root and branches can be textured with a single click. The leaves of the 3D tree can be textured with another click. And the model is now ready to export.

TreeMagik also supports level of detail exporting, and billboarding to further reduce the polygon count.

Previewing the 3D Tree Model.

Before exporting the finished 3D tree, the 3D modeler may wish to preview it in a virtual environment. TreeMagik includes this option. Once a tree is created, pressing the "preview" tab will open a 3D grassland scene, complete with sky and mountains in the horizon, populated by instances of the tree model that has been made.

The user can navigate the scene, studying the tree from different angles to ensure that the 3D tree meets their requirements. Pressing escape exits the preview, and allows the user to make adjustments to the tree Free 3d model before exporting or previewing again.
